|Ever walked through a town and wondered about the stories behind the amazing smells coming from the bakeries and restaurants? There’s a new experience in Malton, often called Yorkshire’s food capital, that lets people do just that. It's not just a walking tour with a few snacks; it’s a proper behind-the-scenes look at the town's incredible food scene. The brand-new ‘Cook’s Walk’ is a guided tour that introduces food lovers and curious explorers to the talented people who make Malton’s food so special. It's a chance to meet the makers, hear their stories, and, of course, taste some delicious local food along the way, all led by an expert from a top local cookery school.
A tour with a tasty difference in Yorkshire
This isn’t your typical tour where someone just points at old buildings. The Cook’s Walk is hosted by Gilly Robinson, the founder and head chef of The Cook’s Place, a well-known cookery school in Malton. She's inviting visitors for an insider's look into the town’s independent food community, its rich history, and the vibrant group of creators who call it home. Think of it as having a friend who knows everyone and everything about the local food scene showing you all the best spots. This is a hands-on way to experience Yorkshire food culture. Gilly Robinson is excited to share the passion of the local community with new people.
As she explained, “Malton is full of extraordinary food producers and passionate makers, and The Cook’s Walk is about introducing guests to the people behind the produce.” It’s all about connecting with the actual producers, the people whose hard work results in the amazing food on offer. The tour is a celebration of the creativity and community that make the Malton food scene so unique and beloved by so many.
More than just a bite to eat
The whole idea behind the Cook’s Walk is to go deeper than just tasting. It’s about understanding where the food comes from and appreciating the skill of the makers who craft it. It's a story of passion and dedication that has been a long time in the making. The tour gives a unique opportunity to connect with these culinary events and the creators behind them.
Gilly Robinson added, “This has been a long time in the planning, and thanks to the generosity of the Malton community, visitors won’t just taste the food — they’ll hear the stories, meet the makers and experience the creativity that makes Malton such a special town.” This focus on community is clear to see. The very first tour, which took place in April, was so popular it sold out straight away. For that event, The Cook’s Place teamed up with the sausage company Heck. As part of a fantastic community project to help with rural isolation, Heck provided transport for people from nearby villages to join the Cook’s Walk, connect with others, and make some great new memories in Malton.
What's on the menu for the Cook's Walk?
So, what can someone expect on this four-hour adventure? It's a carefully planned route designed to showcase the variety and quality of the local food scene. The tour isn't just a random wander; it's a culinary journey through Malton's best bits. The experience is designed for explorers who are keen to discover authentic local culture.
Here’s a little taster of the stops along the way:
A visit to Talbot Yard, a hub for artisan food producers.
A stop at the acclaimed FortySix restaurant.
A browse through the charming Kemps General Store & Bookshop.
A finale at The Cook’s Place for a relaxed ‘Meet the Food Hero’ light lunch.
This lunch is a real highlight. It’s a chance to sit down, enjoy delicious food made with ingredients from regional producers, and chat with a special guest—a local ‘Food Hero’. The tour wraps up around 2.30 pm, which is perfect because it leaves plenty of time in the afternoon to carry on exploring Malton’s independent shops, markets, and cafés.
Meet the local producers behind the magic
Each monthly tour features a different food hero, giving a brilliant reason to come back again. The next available tour in May is set to welcome Sarah Puckett-Lane from Puckett’s Pickles. She’s one of the fantastic local producers making a name for herself. She creates a whole range of brilliant British pickles, chutneys, and other condiments that are packed with flavour. Forget boring stuff from the supermarket; this is the real deal.
Sarah Puckett-Lane is looking forward to joining the lunch and sharing her passion. She said:
“I can’t wait to return to The Cook’s Place after my time spent there last year as a guest producer for a charity supper club. Supporting Gilly and sharing my food stories to the visitors of this town deep rooted in the love of food is something I am really looking forward to.”
Her range of British pickles and other products are a testament to the quality that comes from local creators.
All about The Cook's Place
The host of the tour, The Cook’s Place, is more than just a venue; it’s a cornerstone of the Malton food community. Founded by Gilly Robinson, it's a popular cookery school that offers a wide range of hands-on cookery courses and other culinary events. The focus is always on celebrating seasonal ingredients, championing regional producers, and teaching practical skills that are perfect for home cooks. Whether someone is a total beginner or a confident cook, the school provides a friendly and welcoming space to learn more about food and cooking. It is dedicated to helping home cooks improve their skills with fun and practical cookery courses.
