Malton Museum is based in the Subscription Rooms on Yorkersgate in the heart of the charming market town of Malton. It holds a nationally important collection of artefacts, which are rotated regularly in the museum’s two exhibition rooms. The museum is open Easter to October, Thursday – Saturday 10am – 4pm.Entrance to the museum is free.

Malton Museum’s collection features objects relating to the area’s Roman past as well as items belonging to more recent periods in history, including artefacts connected with horse racing, brewing and other aspects of local life. The collection contains a range of objects many including coins, pottery, weaponry and even a jet bear. These unique snapshots of the area’s past are brought to life with a regular programme of fun, interactive activities for all visitors.

Family workshops run throughout the school holidays, and include craft and drama sessions for all ages. In the past these have included a clay workshop, a jewelry making session and a how to be an archeologist morning. The museum also holds events and activities for adults including talks, tours and hands on sessions with objects from the collection. Please see our website for upcoming event information.

The museum will open its doors at Easter with its new exhibition Malton Goes to Market. The exhibition will celebrate the history of the market, exploring town maps, local businesses and through the stories of the people.

For visitors seeking the great outdoors, the museum offers tours of the local Orchard Fields to share the stories of its Roman history. The museum also runs ‘secrets from the stores’ sessions offering a chance to get hands on with objects. This session is usually guided by a museum professional and offers an in depth insight into objects from our collection. Our ‘tea and treasure’ session takes place in a neighboring café may appeal to those visitors who wish to share stories and enjoy tea and cake. Malton Museum re-gained accreditation in 2014 and embraces a ‘Museum in the Community’ initiative which focuses on sharing our collection with the community. This includes a variety of outreach services such as educational workshops which are delivered in school and library settings and object handling with community groups.
