In 1942, the Spitfire Mk.IX modification on the Mk. V base included the installation of a more potent engine. The plane was reliable in service and possessed excellent flight characteristics. The Mk.IX were used in the European theatre of WWII in many roles – as universal (F), low-altitude (LF) and high-altitude (HF) fighters, as well as being used as fighter-bombers.
