Description Directions Dosage The usual adult dose of nitrofurantoin is: • To treat a urinary tract infection – 100 mg taken twice a day Try to space your doses evenly throughout the day. If you're taking nitrofurantoin twice a day, leave 12 hours between each dose – for example, take it at 8 am and 8 pm. Carry on taking this medicine until you finish the course, even if you feel better. If you stop your treatment early, your problem could come back. This helps your body absorb the medicine, as well as helping to prevent stomach upset. How long to take it for If you're taking nitrofurantoin to: • Treat a urinary tract infection, you usually need to take it for 3 days If you forget to take it If you forget to take a dose of nitrofurantoin, take it as soon as you remember, unless it's nearly time for your next dose. In this case, just leave out the missed dose and take your next dose at the usual time. Never take 2 doses at the same time. Never take an extra dose to make up for a forgotten one. If you often forget doses, it may help to set an alarm to remind you. You could also ask your pharmacist for advice on other ways to help you remember to take your medicine. If you take too much Taking an extra dose of nitrofurantoin is unlikely to harm you. If you've taken more than your prescribed dose of nitrofurantoin and: you're worried or get severe side effects you've taken more than 1 extra dose Go to 111.nhs.uk or call 111 Call 111 if you're asking about a child under the age of 5 years. If you go to A&E, take the nitrofurantoin box or leaflet inside the packet plus any remaining medicine with you. Directions Warnings Like all medications, Nitrofurantoin Capsules can cause side effects, although not everyone experiences them. Most side effects are mild and typically go away when you stop taking the medication. While serious allergic reactions to Nitrofurantoin Capsules are rare, it's important to be aware of the following symptoms : sudden wheeziness difficulty breathing swelling of the eyelids face, or lips, rash, or itching (especially if it affects your entire body)If you experience any of these symptoms, stop taking the medicine immediately and seek medical attention. If you encounter any of the following side effects, discontinue Nitrofurantoin Capsules and consult your doctor : Lung reactions, which may manifest as fever, chills, cough, and shortness of breath associated with pneumonia. Scarring of lung tissue may occur. Jaundice (yellowing of the skin or whites of the eyes) indicating liver inflammation. Nerve damage outside the spinal cord, leading to changes in sensation, muscle use, headache, extreme mood changes, confusion, weakness, and involuntary eye movements. Increased pressure in the skull causing severe headaches. Severe reduction in blood cells, leading to weakness, bruising, or increased susceptibility to infections. Cyanosis (blue or purple skin coloration) due to low oxygen levels. Symptoms resembling fever, flu, abdominal pain, diarrhoea, blood in stool, and weakness, which could indicate a condition called cutaneous vasculitis. Symptoms resembling jaundice, fatigue, abdominal pain, joint pain, and swelling, which could indicate a condition called autoimmune hepatitis. While taking Nitrofurantoin Capsules, your urine may become dark yellow or brown, which is normal and not a cause for concern. Other possible side effects include: Rare: loss of consciousness (collapse) bone marrow damage causing anaemia. Not known : nausea headache loose stools loss of appetite stomach-ache vomiting dizziness drowsiness blood cell abnormalities various skin rashes or reactions short-term hair loss urinary infections by resistant germs inflammation of small blood vessel walls causing skin lesions liver inflammation due to immune system reaction inflammation of kidney tissue causing renal impairment.
