Bred in Germany, the 'Dornfelder' grape is a prolific, early-ripening red variety, ideal for adding body to milder red wines. This grape produces good sized, red-black fruits, which ripen well in the UK climate in October and boast an excellent flavour, making them perfect for desserts, wine, or juice.An easy-to-maintain variety, the 'Dornfelder' exhibits medium vigour and good disease resistance. Grape vines also make an attractive garden feature, with their large leaves and vibrant autumn colour, especially when trained over a pergola. Expect cropping to begin approximately 2 years after planting, with best yields achieved around 3 years.Choose a sunny location with well-drained soil. Before planting, create a framework of wires stretched horizontally between two sturdy 1.8m posts or attached to a warm wall. Enrich the soil with plenty of well-rotted manure or garden compost prior to planting. Plant against the wire supports, ensuring a 2m distance between plants. After planting, reduce the newly planted vine to the height of the lowest support wire, cutting back any side shoots to one bud before tying the main stem to the supporting wires. Water only when dry, as excessive watering can compromise fruit quality. Apply a mulch of well-rotted manure or garden compost to the base of the vines in spring to help retain moisture at their roots throughout the summer. Prune grape vines in winter and train them in summer.
