Product Description
Cellar for up to 20 years. Decant 1 hour before serving. The gorgeous Podere Sapaio estate is set in Tuscany’s coastal Bolgheri region and was founded in 1999 after Massimo Piccin managed to convince his father to invest in land locally and set up a family winery here. Despite the young age of the winery, the Piccins have developed a cult following for their wines thanks to the exceptional terroir and the help of consultant enologist Carlo Ferrini. The winemaking philosophy at Podere Sapaio is defined by innovation and experimentation. The vineyard is planted with a mixture of international grape varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. To produce the very best wines possible, the estate focuses on crafting a tiny amount of just two wines which each capture a different aspect of the local terroir. Named after an ancient Tuscan grape variety, Sapaio is their flagship wine with a base of Cabernet Sauvignon blended with smaller quantities of Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The varieties are fermented separately and aged in French oak for 14 months before the final blend is created. Full-bodied and powerful, this is a magnificent Super Tuscan with a luscious dark berry character complemented by hints of earth, winter spice and dried fruit which linger long on the finish.
