ABOUT THE PORT. Founded in 1638, Kopke is the oldest Port house and a benchmark for aged Tawny and Colheita. This 1998 Single-Harvest (Colheita) Tawny Port was matured for over two decades in seasoned oak in the Douro before release from Kopke’s own cellars. Drawn from a single vintage and aged oxidatively in wood, it balances youthful lift with the layered complexity that long cask ageing brings.. TASTING NOTES. Bright tawny-amber with a golden rim. Aromas of dried apricot, fig and sultana mingle with toffee, caramel and toasted almond, lifted by orange zest, cinnamon and a faint saline note. Silky and sweet yet beautifully poised on the palate, showing walnut praline, caramelised citrus, red-fruit toffee and a lively vein of acidity that keeps everything fresh. Long, elegant finish with lingering nut and burnt-sugar tones.. FOOD PAIRING. Perfect with crème brûlée, salted-caramel tart, pastel de nata, sticky toffee pudding, or a board of blue and hard cheeses. Also excellent with salted nuts. Serve lightly chilled (12–14°C).. FRIARWOOD SAYS. Colheita = single-vintage Tawny aged a minimum of 7 years in cask; this 1998 rested in wood for well over twenty years before bottling. It’s a classic Kopke: rich, nutty and silk-textured, yet remarkably fresh—a glorious winter sipper and a superb gift for any Port lover.
