Cillar de Silos ‘La Viña de Amalio’ 2019/22, Ribero del Duero

In the 1970s, Amalio Aragón began buying small plots of the best vineyards he could find. By the turn of the century, his three children had helped him establish a winery renowned for quality. The family’s emphasis on low yields, carefully hand-picked grapes and long ageing means their wines stand apart. Amalio’s son, Óscar, heads up the winemaking, and this limited-production wine was created in his father’s honour. It’s made from a small plot of vines, many of which are over 100 years old. Only ten barrels are made each year, making this unique Ribera even more special. Big. Bold. Structured. It’s layered with fresh and intense red- and black-fruit flavours. Notes of chocolate, herbs and earthy, sweet spices add to its complexity. Drink now or cellar for 5 years. Wonderful with pork ragoût sprinkled with grated Manchego cheese.
