Elgin might not be as recognisable a name in South African wine as Stellenbosch, but this cool-climate region is only a hop away across the Hottentots Holland mountains. With higher altitudes and notable proximity to the South Atlantic Ocean, just 12km away, vineyards see slower grape ripening and the resulting wines are beautifully balanced with depth and complexity. At Radford Dale, the certified organic range is made using non-interventionist methods and with minimal additives. Grapes for this bottling come from five different blocks, handpicked to capture freshness and retain elegance. Expect notes of blackberry, spice, mulberry and forest floor, and fine tannins. Try it with duck, game birds or stews like beef bourguignon.
