Saint-Amour, Domaine des Billards estate is located in the north side of Beaujolais Cru, one of the smaller regions in Beaujolais. The majority of the vineyards are planted on south and east-facing hillsides on the banks of the Saone river. The aspect of the vineyards is very important as it maximizes sun exposure, ensuring the grapes ripen fully and develop complex flavours. Saint-Amour is sheltered by hills, which protect the vineyards from heavy weather. Due to dry and long hours of sun exposure, the harvest is normally earlier in comparison to vineyards planted in the south of Beaujolais, which are normally flat. Gamay is the predominant grape variety in Saint-Amour, with other grapes such as Chardonnay and Aligoté also planted in the region.
