Lavandula angustifolia 'Hidcote' is celebrated for its rich purple blooms and powerful fragrance, complemented by a neat, upright habit and bushy, compact form. As one of the best-known English Lavenders, 'Hidcote' boasts excellent and reliable garden performance. For optimal growth, plant English lavender in free-draining soil and a position in full sun. Lavender dislikes wet ground, particularly during winter, so improve heavy soil by adding coarse grit or sharp sand prior to planting. When growing in large patio containers, use a well-drained soil-based compost. After planting, prune to encourage bushy growth and water regularly throughout summer until fully established, after which it becomes reasonably drought-tolerant. Immediately after flowering, prune back to within 2cm (1 inch) of the previous year’s growth to maintain a compact, well-shaped plant. Position in full sun for best results.
