Product Description
Bred in Germany, the 'Dornfelder' grape is a prolific, early-ripening variety, ideal for adding body to lighter red wines. This grape produces good-sized, red-black fruits that mature well in the UK around October. The grapes boast a delightful flavour, making them perfect for desserts, winemaking, or juicing. 'Dornfelder' is an easy-to-grow variety, displaying medium vigour and good resistance to disease. With their large leaves and attractive autumn colour, these grape vines also create a stunning garden feature when trained over a pergola. Expect cropping within approximately 2 years of planting, with best yields achieved around 3 years.Choose a sunny location with well-drained soil. Before planting, create a framework of wires stretched horizontally between two sturdy 1.8m posts, or attach them to a warm wall. Enrich the soil with plenty of well-rotted manure or garden compost prior to planting. Plant against the wire supports, maintaining a 2m distance between each plant. After planting, reduce the new vine's height to the lowest support wire, cutting back any side shoots to one bud before securing the main stem to the wires. Water only during dry spells, as excessive watering can compromise fruit quality. In spring, apply a mulch of well-rotted manure or garden compost to the base of the vines to help retain moisture throughout the summer. Prune the grape vines in winter and train them during the summer months. Avoid allowing the vines to bear a grape crop until their second summer.Caution: Contact may cause skin irritation.Position: Full Sun.Height: Trained up to 1.8m (Untrained plants may reach up to 8m).Spread: Trained up to 1.5m.Supplied in a 2 Litre Nursery Pot.Images are for illustrative purposes only and represent the expected results from mature plants.
