Sambucus nigra 'Haschberg'

An Austrian variety popular with commercial orchards for its bumper yields of large, deep purple fruits. Sambucus nigra ?Haschberg? is also excellent for wildlife. In late spring and early summer, scented umbels of white blooms will become a magnet for pollinating insects and can be used to make elderflower cordial. Berries with follow in late summer to early autumn - perfect for making wines, jams and desserts, as well as being adored by birds. This quick-growing shrub produces sturdy, upright stems, cloaked in green leaves which form an excellent stand alone specimen or can be grown as part of an ?edible hedgerow? collection with species such as crab apple, cherry and blackthorn. Sambucus nigra ?Haschberg? is a resilient, self-fertile Elder which happily grows in most soil types, even heavy clay, and is also disease-free. Height: 4m (13ft). Spread: 2m (6.5ft).
