Pinus parviflora 'Glauca'

An award-winning specimen tree with a graceful habit and striking silvery-blue needles. Pinus parviflora 'Glauca' makes a stunning focal point in an Asian-themed or coastal garden and is also a favourite for bonsai growing. This small, slow-growing conifer has a narrow, conical habit when young before widely spreading as it matures, forming an uneven, flattened canopy. The rigid, twisted needles are mostly grouped at the ends of stems in groups of 5 to create a mass of eye-catching brush-shaped tops. Young bark emerges purple-grey and becomes dark and fissured with age. Cones will hang from this Japanese White Pine from a young age which persist for 6-7 years, meaning older trees bear masses of cones. Pinus parviflora 'Glauca' tolerates pollution and sea winds, making it an excellent choice for coastal gardens. Mature height: 12m (39ft). Spread: 8m (26ft).
