William Morris Strawberry Thief Soft Blue Mural

Inspired by the Oxfordshire garden of Kelmscott Manor, Strawberry Thief is perhaps William Morris's most recognisable design. Legend has it that Morris was motivated to create the design by watching thrushes steal strawberries from under his nets. Originally printed using hand-carved woodblocks to build up the different colours, the intricate pattern made 'Strawberry Thief' one of the most costly cottons produced by Morris's firm. The design, which caused Morris many sleepless nights in his lodgings at Merton Abbey, was first conceived in 1883 and has remained an iconic and beloved design ever since.
