Athyrium niponicum 'Pictum'

Athyrium niponicum var. pictum is commonly called the Japanese Painted Fern - and for good reason! Its elegant fronds unfurl to an almost horizontal position, displaying their fabulous colouring to best effect. Each frond is palest silvery-grey, contrasting beautifully with its maroon-purple midribs. This exquisite deciduous fern has a low, creeping habit that gradually spreads to form wide groups. Perfect for damp, shaded spots in the garden where it will provide texture and interest on neutral to acid soils. A great choice for woodland gardens or the boggy soil at the edge of a shaded pond.
