Aralia elata

Aralia elata makes a bold botanical statement with its dramatic, architectural presence. Native to eastern Asia and known as the Japanese angelica tree, this striking deciduous shrub or small tree boasts towering, spiny stems adorned with broad fans of large, deeply divided bipinnate leaves - sometimes over a metre long - lending a lush, tropical feel to mixed borders or woodland settings.In summer, airy panicles of creamy-white flowers burst forth, attracting bees and other pollinators later turning into clusters of dark berries that add further seasonal interest. Come autumn, the foliage lights up with yellow to orange-red hues before the leaves fall to reveal an intriguing winter framework of textured bark and strong, upright branches that continue to catch the eye.
