Since its introduction in 1876, Clematis The President has remained a firm favourite, and it's easy to see why. This free-flowering, easy-to-grow variety showcases large, velvety-purple blooms with captivating silvery undersides from June to September. Following the richly coloured flowers are attractive silvery seed heads, which add further interest well into the next season. Fully grown, this deciduous climber reaches a height of 3m and a spread of 1m, thriving in a sunny or semi-shaded spot. When planting, ensure the climber is positioned deeply in moist, fertile, well-drained soil, with the top of the root ball approximately 7.5cm below the surface to encourage new shoots. Clematis dislikes excessively wet or dry conditions; improve the soil with well-rotted manure or garden compost as needed. When planting in patio containers, a soil-based compost is recommended. Train your Clematis along a suitable support such as a trellis, wires, or a freestanding climbing frame. This variety belongs to pruning group 2. Position: Sun or Semi-Shade.
