Melianthus major

A superb foliage shrub that will swiftly form an eye-catching architectural feature in the garden. Melianthus major boasts large, deeply cut, blueish-green foliage with heavily serrated edges and a surprising peanut butter aroma when crushed. Unusual burgundy flower spikes with a honey-like fragrance will emerge throughout the summer, as long as the plant is overwintered with the stems intact, but it's the incredible foliage that makes this plant such a striking specimen. An excellent choice for exotic gardens and ornamental borders, where it will grow extremely quickly. Alternatively, grow in a large pot amongst other exotic plants for an impressive display. Melianthus major is half-hardy so will need protecting over winter in colder areas, or if grown in a pot moved under cover before first frosts. Height 3m (10ft). Spread: 2m (6.5ft).
