Product Description

An interesting small deciduous tree or shrub, better known as the Osage Orange. Although Maclura pomifera produces orange-like fruits, it's not related to the citrus but is in fact from the Mulberry family. Native to North America, this hardy tree is named after the Osage Indians of Missouri who used the tree wood to make bows and arrows. Maclura pomifera forms a broad, spreading crown of thorny branches covered in ovate, deep green foliage. In autumn, the leaves will turn vivid yellow and are accompanied by scented, tennis-ball-sized fruits with bumpy skin. The fruits cannot be eaten but add excellent ornamental interest, transforming from green to yellow-orange as they mature. Male trees will require a pollination partner to fruit whereas solitary female trees will produce seedless fruits. Once established, Maclura pomifera is drought tolerant, thriving in freely-draining soil and will also cope in shallow chalk. An eye-catching specimen tree for a medium to large garden. Mature height and spread: 8 to 15 metres (26?50 ft).
