Product Description
Corylus avellana Contorta, also known as the Corkscrew Hazel, is a deciduous shrub of distinction, defined by its curiously twisted branches. Delicate yellow catkins dangle gracefully from the bare stems in February, preceding the unfurling of small, contorted green leaves. This shrub makes a superb feature for winter borders, woodland areas and oriental planting schemes. The crooked stems are also much loved by florists.Plant in a position of sun or semi-shade in any fertile, well-drained soil. Corylus will also tolerate alkaline soils well, making it useful in chalky areas. Feed and water regularly until established. Once established, little maintenance is required; however, the stems can be cut back to just a few buds from the base of the plant to promote fresh contorted stems for the following season. Alternatively, remove any crossing, damaged or misplaced stems in the alternate winter or early spring. Ideal for cottage gardens, cut flower gardens, specimen plants, and woodland gardens. Hardy. Position in sun or semi-shade. Height: up to 500cm. Spread: up to 500cm.
