Magnolias thrive in rich, moist, well-drained, acid to neutral soil. Enhance the soil before planting by incorporating plenty of well-rotted manure or garden compost, mixing thoroughly and deeply. Magnolia plants establish more quickly when their roots are shaded. After planting, mulch with rotted bark chips, manure, or garden compost, avoiding mounding around the stem of the plant.
