Alex has walked away from her home and marriage, bought the first available ticket to anywhere and has no idea where she will go next in life. Sandy, outwardly strong and confident, grew up on a small island in a small-minded world, but has gradually established a successful career and her place in the wider world.However, the seeds of insecurities sown in childhood are not far beneath the surface, affecting an outwardly successful relationship, her friendships, her career and ultimately her whole life. As the stories merge, the question of whether it’s possible, or even desirable, to ever fully escape the pull of the past becomes crucial to the choices that need to be made. Touching on family, friendship and the nature of platonic love, this is a story of the subtle solidarity of some women and hostility of others, of how men relate to women entering ‘their’ world, how we affect our children and they us, and ultimately how the past can draw us back in ways we least expect.
