LOVERBOY's latest offering, "Get Lucky," is a rollercoaster ride of cheesy '80s synth-pop nostalgia that will have you grooving and cringing in equal measure. The Canadian band's third album is a mixed bag of sonic experiments, from the infectious earworm of the title track to the cringeworthy lyrics of "Love at First Sight." Lead singer Johnny Heartthrob's vocals are as smooth as silk, effortlessly gliding over the upbeat, danceable rhythms that define the album. His falsetto on tracks like "Heartbreaker" and "Summer Love" is enough to make even the most cynical listener swoon. But it's not all roses and sunshine on "Get Lucky." The band's attempts at edginess fall flat on tracks like "Rock 'n' Roll Rebels" and "Bad Boys," where the cliched lyrics and predictable guitar riffs make you want to roll your eyes rather than raise your fist in rebellion. Overall, LOVERBOY's "Get Lucky" is a fun, guilty pleasure of an album that will transport you back to the days of neon leg warmers and hair metal.
