Holes in the surface of the brake disc offer several advantages. A drilled surface offers a better surface for the brake pad to bite down on. The edges of the holes provide additional friction when the brake pedal is pressed.When driving in wet conditions, the holes in the surface help clear water. This means there isn't that slight delay in initial braking whilst the pad sweeps the water from the surface of the disc.The holes in surface of the disc help heat and hot gases escape into the vented centre of the disc, keeping temperatures lower. This means Brembo Xtra brake discs perform better under harsh repeated braking when the brake system is hot.At higher temperatures, the pad compound can start to combust into hot gas which can build up as a layer between the pad and disc surface. This layer of hot gas prevents the pad properly acting on the disc.
