In most cases, the filter itself will either be positioned in an optimum location for good airflow from outside the engine bay or else pipework will bring air from there to the filter.This avoids issues of heat soak, but in most cases, maintains the improvements in the sound you get with a more open filter.Pipework is carefully designed to maintain air velocity and improve torque.All of this means your engine gets a faster supply of cold air. While most cars nowadays have a fairly competent factory airbox, once you start tuning the rest of the engine up you can find its limits.
