So St Bede’s Catholic Church in Marske was my church growing up. I loved it there and have many happy memories. I was baptised in 1970 by Fr. Vasey twice apparently. One over my kitchen sink when I caught whooping cough at a few weeks old. Not sure if my parents called the village doctor but my Irish Catholic father certainly got Fr Vasey straight to my house to baptise me over the kitchen sink, just in case. Obviously he did a proper job in church some weeks later where (God rest his presumably Irish soul) I was baptised Liza Kate. 1. Because the Irish pronounce Lisa’Liza’ at Catholic school I got used to that and 2. Despite my middle name being Catherine after my granny Katie Murphy, who Fr Vasey no doubt knew, he kept in line with her nickname Kate. My birth certificate says Lisa Catherine but in St Bedes I’m Liza Kate. Fair enough. My father taught at Sacred Heart Catholic school in Redcar and was serious in the Catholic community. Hence I came home to Fr Vasey on my sofa many a day. My main priest was Fr Dutton, for my 1st holy communion, confirmation etc. He also carried out my father’s funeral in 2000. Despite being heavily pregnant he got me on my knees the night before to say 10,000 Holy Mary’s. My father (God rest his soul) wasn’t the nicest or best father. But I kneeled and said every Hail Mary anyway. Now I’ve finally moved back to Marske it’s my church again. Because I can actually sing, apparently I have to sit in the newly formed Catholic Choir each Sunday and sing my head off. God bless Pa, he was musical and taught me how to read and write music at 3. Hence I’ve now formed (unexpectedly) the new St Bede’s choir at church every Sunday. I’m not mocking, I genuinely love singing and can actually hold a tune with enough volume to drown out the less enthusiastic. There’s a big group of more mature ladies that genuinely seem pleased to see me every Sunday to bully me into taking tea at 12.30 every week. How could you say no to such lovely people. I’m on the list as a Xmas church cleaner. I have no idea what’s coming next but I’m a good sport so watch this spot! Love to you all, Lisa Rudham. You might have known my father Dennis, he made sure we never missed a week. Got rest his soul. Xx
