What do you want to do on your birthday? asked my wife. Visit Theakston Brewery for a pint of Old Peculier from the wood, said I. And so we did. After a wander and a picnic at nearby Druid's Temple, we headed into Masham and found our way through snickets and alleyways between hop vines and beer kegs to Theakston's Black Bull in Paradise on-site pub. There was no quibbling about my order and after checking out the wooden barrel in situ in the cellar, and having a peek at Euan the cooper's workshop, the requisite pint was poured by the very friendly and knowledgeable barman. It was every bit as good as I hoped it'd be - if you're an OP fan, then finding a pint from the wood is a must. The place itself boasts a mezzanine where we settled down for a much-needed cool-down - my parents opting for Theakston's Paradise Gold cider and the kids going for their usual cokes. Plenty of games were available for family fun, but the mini ring the bull was the favourite. After the OP I thought it'd be rude not to try few other beers so, with the kids' patience running out, I grabbed a flight of three pales: Lightfoot, Peculier IPA and Quencher - all decent, but OP remains my beer of choice when it comes to Theakstons. Of course, I had to visit the shop on the way out where I picked up a few bottles and cans, including the excellent Nowt Peculier - an amazingly tasty alcohol-free version of OP. I'll definitely be looking out for more of that. So, Theakston's Brewery - well worth the pilgrimage. Perhaps next time it'll have to be Black Sheep to see what the offshoot brewery has going on.

Great beer. Competitive prices. Attentive helpful staff. Quirky bar area full of character, and you can watch the cooper make the barrels. There is a brewery tour if you so desire. Great little place steeped in history.

Simply the best beer you could ask for. And in a beautiful pub setting. The cooperage is still active too. The staff are super happy and can help with choices. The brewery shop is awesome, make sure you bring a big carry bag 😆!! If you like Yorkshire ale, Theakston has to be on your visit to do list.

Really enjoyed the tour, Dave was very knowledgeable & explained the brewing process from start to end. The 3 bats of ale were a great option to try 3 different Theakston beers. It's definitely worth a visit.

Went for the brewery tour in the beautiful market town of Masham. Tour gave a fascinating insight into the Theakson world delivered by an extremely knowledgeable, entertaining and passionate tour guide who certainly knew everything everything about the history and the beer. Best of all a lovely pint of Old Peculiar in the bar at the end which my Dad described as the best pint he had ever had.
