Sheffield Vet Dr Laura Higham Named Finalist for BVA Sustainability Award 2026

Welcome to Yorkshire

Published on June 3rd, 2026

A vet from Sheffield, Dr Laura Higham, has been recognised as a finalist for the BVA One Health and Sustainability Award 2026, a prestigious honour given by the British Veterinary Association (BVA). This award, introduced in memory of Dr Simon Doherty, a former president of the BVA who was passionate about sustainability and the concept of One Health, aims to highlight veterinary initiatives that promote awareness and action on critical environmental and health issues.

Dr Higham's Achievements

Dr Higham, who graduated from the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies in 2008, has made significant contributions to the veterinary field. She has been nominated for her exceptional leadership in embedding One Health principles within veterinary practice. This means she has worked hard to position vets as key figures in promoting environmental sustainability, ensuring food systems are resilient, and enhancing public health.

One of her notable achievements is founding Vet Sustain, a platform designed to help veterinary professionals become leaders in sustainability. This initiative is the first of its kind to provide coordinated support, empowering vets to make impactful changes in their communities and beyond.

Dr Higham's Response

Expressing her gratitude, Dr Higham:

“I feel delighted and incredibly honoured to be named a finalist for the BVA One Health and Sustainability Award. So many others deserve this privilege, not least my colleagues and friends at Vet Sustain. It's only as a collective with our diverse experiences and perspectives that we're able to take action and drive change together.”

She also shared how discovering sustainability and understanding the unique role of veterinary professionals in the One Health domains has shaped her career. “It’s also become a passion, a source of hope, and a pathway for me to contribute with confidence to our profession as a non-practising vet," she added.

Importance of the BVA Awards

The BVA Awards are an important event in the veterinary calendar, recognising inspirational vets who go above and beyond for their patients and clients. These awards celebrate those who support wellbeing, foster positive workplace cultures, drive sustainability, provide mentoring, and push the boundaries of veterinary science. British Veterinary Association President Dr Rob Williams commented:

“Vet teams have a profound impact both on the lives of individual animals and people, but also on society at large.”

He further noted that the awards allow the community to take a moment to celebrate the fantastic work done by veterinary professionals. “This year’s award finalists stand out as shining examples of the very best of the veterinary profession, and it’s going to be very difficult to choose winners for each award,” he said.

Other Award Categories

Alongside the One Health and Sustainability Award, several other awards have been announced, including:

  • BVA Young Vet of the Year, supported by Zoetis

  • BVA Wellbeing Awards, supported by ManyPets

  • BVA Veterinary Mentor Award, supported by Hill’s Pet Nutrition

  • BVA Veterinary Leader Award, supported by Vetnique - YuMOVE Veterinary

The winners of these awards will be announced at the BVA Awards Dinner, taking place on Thursday, 11 June 2026, at the Hilton Birmingham Metropole. This event will feature a sparkling drinks reception, a delicious three-course dinner, and DJ entertainment until midnight. Tickets are available for BVA members at a price of £79 plus VAT.

Additionally, the BVA Live event will occur on 11–12 June 2026 at the NEC Birmingham, where attendees can learn more about veterinary practices and innovations. Fully funded tickets are available for those interested.

Dr Higham’s recognition as a finalist not only highlights her personal achievements but also brings attention to the vital role that veterinary professionals play in addressing sustainability and public health challenges.
