Lidl Launches Food Waste Initiative in Yorkshire Starting May 15, 2026

Welcome to Yorkshire

Published on May 13th, 2026

Lidl GB is set to launch an exciting new initiative aimed at reducing food waste across Yorkshire and the North East. Starting on 15th May 2026, this project will involve a partnership with Neighbourly and the popular food-sharing app Olio, allowing surplus food from Lidl stores to be redistributed to those in need.

What Is the Initiative?

The programme will kick off in 20 Lidl stores located in various areas including York, Newcastle, Pickering, Alnwick, Ashington, Driffield, Hexham, and Morpeth. The goal is to ensure that unsold food, such as chilled items, fresh produce, and baked goods, doesn’t go to waste. Instead, it will be collected by volunteers from Olio, who will then share this food with local residents for free using the Olio app.

Why Does This Matter?

Food waste is a significant issue, with millions of tonnes of edible food thrown away each year. Lidl GB aims to tackle this problem head-on. By redistributing food that would otherwise end up in the bin, the initiative could potentially save more than 5,000 tonnes of food annually, translating to approximately 11.9 million meals for those in need. This effort not only helps reduce waste but also supports families who may be struggling financially.

Safron, an Olio volunteer from Ashington, highlighted the importance of this initiative, stating, "Some families in the area rely on it to feed their children." This insight shows how crucial access to surplus food can be, especially in communities that have fewer supermarkets and resources.

How Does It Work?

The process is straightforward. In the evenings, Olio volunteers will collect unsold items from Lidl stores. These volunteers, known as Food Waste Heroes, are everyday people who want to make a difference in their communities. They will gather food that is still safe to eat and share it through the Olio app, ensuring that it reaches local residents who can benefit from it.

Anyone interested in helping out can sign up to be a Food Waste Hero themselves, with no special experience or vehicle required. This opens up opportunities for more community members to get involved in reducing food waste and helping their neighbours.

A Step Toward Sustainability

Lidl’s new initiative is part of a broader commitment to sustainability. The supermarket has set an ambitious target to cut food waste by 70% by the end of the financial year 2030. This collaboration with Neighbourly and Olio is seen as a significant step towards achieving that goal. Matt Juden, Head of Sustainability at Lidl GB, expressed the company's dedication by stating, "At Lidl GB, we believe that no good food should ever go to waste."

By enhancing its existing partnership with Neighbourly and incorporating Olio’s network, Lidl aims to maximise food sharing in communities. This means that even if charities cannot collect food, the programme will ensure that nothing goes to waste.

Voices from the Community

Community leaders and volunteers are optimistic about the impact this initiative will have. Steve Butterworth, CEO of Neighbourly, commented, "Our mission has always been to ensure as much edible surplus food as possible goes to those in our communities that need it most." His words underline the collaborative nature of this project, highlighting the importance of community involvement in tackling food waste.

Saasha Celestial-One, Co-founder and COO of Olio, added, "We’re excited to see the impact of the trial, and we know our volunteers will be thrilled to have the chance to rescue Lidl food via our app." With such enthusiasm from leaders in the community, there is hope that this programme will not only reduce waste but also strengthen local ties.

Looking Ahead

If the trial is successful, Lidl plans to expand this initiative nationwide by the end of 2026. This could mean even more communities across the UK will benefit from access to surplus food, helping to alleviate hunger and reduce waste on a larger scale.

The launch of this food-sharing initiative in Yorkshire and the North East represents a significant step towards creating a more sustainable future. By working together, Lidl, Neighbourly, and Olio are paving the way for communities to support one another while tackling the pressing issue of food waste. As the programme rolls out, it will be interesting to see how it evolves and the positive impact it has on local families.
