How the Special Unveiling at Ripon VFF Anniversary Party Celebrated a Year of Veteran Support

It’s not every day a care home throws a party that makes the local news, but that’s exactly what happened over at Sycamore Hall Care Home in Ripon. On Monday, 13th April 2026, the residents, staff, and a host of special guests gathered for some serious celebrations. This wasn't just any old get-together with cake and balloons, though.

It was to mark a very special first anniversary: one year of being an officially recognised 'Veteran Friendly' place to live. It’s a big deal, and the party was the perfect way to celebrate a year of incredible work supporting armed forces veterans. A formal press release detailed the event, but the story behind it is all about community, understanding, and making a real difference for the residents who once served their country.

What does 'veteran friendly' actually mean?

It’s easy to see a phrase like ‘Veteran Friendly Framework’ and just nod along, but what does it really involve? Well, it’s a national scheme that was kicked off in 2023. The main idea is to help care homes get better at looking after the specific needs of armed forces veterans. Think about it, someone who has served in the military has had experiences that are completely different from civilian life. The Veteran Friendly Framework, often shortened to VFF, helps carers understand this.

It’s a collaboration between big-name charities like the Royal British Legion and Royal Star & Garter, and it’s all about making sure that the more than 25,000 veterans living in care homes across England feel understood, supported, and less isolated. It's about knowing the right questions to ask and creating a space where people feel safe to share their stories, or not, if they prefer. Trust is a massive part of it. Paul Graham, the secretary of the Ripon branch of the Royal British Legion, was one of the guests at the anniversary party and put it perfectly. He said, “It’s great to have more veteran friendly homes which have a full understanding of the needs that veterans can have, especially those who have seen combat. Trust is incredibly important to veterans and the trust that those caring for them have understanding of their experiences goes a long way.”

A party fit for heroes in Ripon

To mark the big one-year anniversary, Sycamore Hall Care Home didn’t do things by halves. The centrepiece of the celebrations was the official placement of a special VFF plaque right by the main entrance. It’s a simple thing, a plaque, but it’s a powerful symbol that tells everyone this is a place that gets it. The honour of revealing the VFF plaque went to the Mayor of Ripon, Cllr Barbara Brodigan, who did the honours in front of a crowd of residents, staff, and community members. It was a proper community affair.

The guest list was a testament to how important this work is in Ripon. Alongside Paul Graham from the Royal British Legion, guests included Royal Engineers veteran Mike O’Reilley and Jules Walker, who is a support project officer for the whole Veteran Friendly Framework. Of course, the most important guests were the home’s own armed forces veterans, including residents Peter Holdsworth, 76, and Ian Newby, 88. You can just imagine the atmosphere, full of pride and a sense of shared community. The photos from the day show smiling faces and a genuine sense of warmth. Mike O’Reilley summed up the local feeling, adding, “Ripon has always been a military town at heart. Many people came for service and stayed here because of the community spirit. It’s great to see Sycamore Hall embracing and building on that spirit with their veteran work.”

It's about more than just a party

Achieving the Veteran Friendly Framework status back in 2025 was the start of the journey for Sycamore Hall Care Home, not the end. This anniversary was a chance to look back on a year packed with brilliant activities designed to support their veteran residents. It’s one thing to have a plaque, but it’s the day-to-day stuff that really counts. The team has put in a massive effort to create a real hub for the local veteran community. The residents have been busy with all sorts of things.

Here are just a few of the things they’ve been up to:

Regular coffee mornings with members of the Royal British Legion, which are probably a great chance for a proper natter.

  • A special performance by singer Katen Clegg to mark Armed Forces Week

  • A visit from a real-life Regimental Sergeant Major from The British Army’s 21 Engineer Regiment for cream tea and conversation.

  • Trips out and about in Ripon to see community art, like the knitted poppy displays and even a knitted tank at The Ripon Inn.

  • A fun day out at Newby Hall organised by The Not Forgotten Association, a charity for service and ex-service personnel.

  • A moving Remembrance service led by members of Holy Trinity Church in Ripon.

This list, taken from the information shared in the official press release, shows a real commitment from the staff. It’s this kind of consistent effort that builds the trust Paul Graham talked about. It makes sure the residents feel connected not just to each other, but to the wider community in Ripon as well.

A team effort with a bright future

None of this happens by magic. It takes a dedicated team to make it all work. Ewelina Sosnowska, the home manager at Sycamore Hall Care Home, was quick to praise her staff for their hard work. She said, “It is great to have the support of the veteran community. The VFF has taken a lot of work from our fantastic team, especially Kay, Jill and those who supported the project. It means a lot to the residents, especially those who are veterans.” It’s clear the whole team is behind the Veteran Friendly Framework. She added,

We were delighted to see such a great turnout for the celebration and we look forward to welcoming more veterans to Sycamore Hall, assured that we can give them the understanding and support they deserve.

After such a successful first year and a fantastic anniversary party, it looks like the future is bright for the residents and armed forces veterans at Sycamore Hall. These celebrations are a brilliant reminder of the amazing work being done to support those who have given so much.
