The 500 Potential UK Locations For New M&S Food Stores In Yorkshire

Welcome to Yorkshire

Published on November 24th, 2025

Ever found yourself doing the weekly shop and wishing you had a bit more elbow room? Or maybe your local M&S is perfect for a few bits but far too small for a proper trolley dash. For people in Yorkshire, that could soon change in a big way. Marks & Spencer has announced a huge expansion of its Food business, with 500 potential UK locations identified for brand new or fully modernised stores. A good chunk of those sites are right here in God’s Own County.

This is not just a fresh coat of paint. It is about creating bigger, better food halls designed for the way people shop today.

A big plan for M&S Food stores

Let’s break it down. M&S is not making small moves. It is going for a major expansion driven by the success of its newest food stores, which have gone down brilliantly with customers.

The retailer has highlighted 500 potential sites for openings or serious refurbishments. Before the end of the current financial year, more than 20 new or renewed stores will open across the UK. That means around 800 new jobs and a major boost for local economies.

It is all part of a strategy to put the right M&S stores in the right places, ensuring they have the space, layout and product range customers expect. The plan is bold, ambitious and aimed at giving more towns access to bigger, modern food halls.

What makes these new stores different?

So what does a “modernised” M&S Food store look like?

Think of it as moving from a compact convenience shop to a bright, spacious food hall. The biggest change is the wider aisles, designed to make shopping easier and eliminate trolley traffic.

The stores will be larger, meaning a far bigger range of fresh produce, bakery items, ready meals and more. And the improvements do not stop at the entrance. Many of the new or updated stores will feature bigger car parks, making family shops less stressful.

M&S aims for more than half of its stores, including smaller convenience formats, to adopt this new design by April 2028. It is a serious long term investment in improving the customer experience.

Yorkshire towns on the new M&S map

Now for the part everyone in Yorkshire wants to know. Where exactly could these new or revamped M&S Food stores appear?

These are potential sites, so nothing is confirmed. But the list shows exactly where M&S is looking to invest across the region.

Here are the towns and neighbourhoods in Yorkshire named as possibilities:

Bingley
• Birstall
Brighouse
• Cortonwood, Barnsley
• Driffield
• Ecclesall Road, Sheffield
• Guisborough
• Holmfirth
Ilkley
• Knaresborough
• Mosborough, Sheffield
• Northallerton
• Norton College, Sheffield
• Pontefract
• Richmond
• Scarborough
• South Doncaster
• The Springs, Leeds
Thirsk
• Wakefield Road, Huddersfield
• West Huddersfield
• Wetherby
• Wickersley
• Yarm

A new or fully updated M&S Food store in any of these places could make a huge difference for local shoppers, bringing convenience, choice and investment into town centres and neighbourhoods.

What the boss has to say

The man leading the charge is Alex Freudmann, Managing Director of M&S Food. He says the success of the new store formats proves that customers love the changes, and it gives the company complete confidence to accelerate the rollout.

Speaking on 24 November 2025, he said:

“The strong performance of our new M&S Food stores gives us the confidence to explore even more locations across the UK, from Elgin to Exmouth. With more than 20 stores opening or modernised before the end of the financial year, we are moving faster. Our team want new sites where we could open a large M&S Food store as we deliver on our strategy to bring the right stores to the right places and offer the best shopping experience, range and availability for our customers.”

In simple terms, customers love the new stores, so M&S is going full steam ahead. Whether you live in a busy city or one of the smaller Yorkshire towns on the list, the retailer’s focus is on opening bigger, better food halls that genuinely improve the weekly shop.
