Welcome to Yorkshire
Published on December 9th, 2024
•If you want great food, Yorkshire and the Humber is where it’s at. In Harden’s Best UK Restaurants 2025, the area has 60 top restaurants, four of which are in the Top 100. Leeds and York are hot hot hot, with two of the most listed cities outside of London.
Whether you want Japanese-inspired food, inventive British or locally foraged flavours, Yorkshire is the place to be for a foodie revolution.

Endo Kazutoshi’s London winner
While Yorkshire is shining, the UK’s best restaurant this year is in London. Endo Kazutoshi’s Endo at the Rotunda, above the old Television Centre in White City, has won the top spot in the diners’ poll. This 10-seater omakase experience is all about art, tradition and flavour. Diners have raved about the “extraordinary dining experience” where Endo himself brings theatre to the table, making every meal unforgettable.
After being closed for five months earlier this year for a refurb, Endo’s hard work in pushing the boundaries of Japanese food has clearly paid off. He says:
“I feel a deep sense of responsibility and pride to be a leader… to celebrate this rich tradition and lead its evolution globally.”
Yorkshire’s best restaurants: Top 100 picks
The Angel, Hetton (#26)
In the countryside, The Angel in Hetton, with Michael Wignall at the helm, is making waves with its creative cooking. Known for intense flavours and occasional Japanese influences, diners call it “perfect” and even liken it to Simon Rogan’s style. If you go, prepare for “stunning British produce” used in ways that will blow your mind.
Roots, York (#76)
Tommy Banks has done it again with Roots, the York city centre pub turned foodie favourite. “Inventive cooking” is the praise for this hot new venue that combines creativity with seasonality.
Jöro, Sheffield (#78)
From its shipping container origins to the Oughtibridge Paper Mill, Jöro in Sheffield has grown into a full-on restaurant. With “beautiful pairings” of locally foraged ingredients and drinks, it’s a must-visit if you’re in the Peak District.
Myse, Hovingham (#96)
And finally, the last of Yorkshire’s top 100 is the one-year-old Myse, run by Josh and Victoria Overington. An “outstanding meal in a beautiful setting”. Some diners questioned whether it was worth the price, but most agree it is, so book in before the waiting list gets even longer.
Regional Dining: Beyond the Capital is Booming
One of the biggest surprises in this year’s guide is the post-Covid recovery split between London and the regions. Restaurants outside the capital are seeing price hikes of 16%-21% in the top end (£100+ per head) compared to 10%-15% in London.
Why? Says Peter Harden, co-founder of Harden’s:
“London is still feeling the hangover from the pandemic… beyond the capital things are just ticking along a bit better.”
Yorkshire has the numbers to back this up, with Leeds (19) and York (17) having a lot to choose from.
Why Harden’s guide is different
Now in its 34th edition, Harden’s Best UK Restaurants is the only guide to restaurants that uses diner feedback not professional critics. This year’s survey had 30,000 reports from 2,500 contributors covering street food to Michelin-starred restaurants.
And if you want to see even more, the full guide (£20) is available in print and app, with 2,800 restaurants across the country. Book your next foodie adventure now!
