Welcome to Yorkshire
Published on July 18th, 2025
•Right, picture this. You're wandering through the gorgeous city of York, maybe grabbing a coffee, and you hear... music. And a bit of bleating. You turn the corner by the magnificent York Minster, and you see it. A whole herd of sheep, getting their groove on. No, you haven't had too much sugar in your tea. This is actually happening, and it’s one of the most brilliant things planned for Yorkshire Day this year.
If you're looking for something fun, a bit bonkers, and completely free to do, then you’re in the right place. The city is pulling out all the stops, and whether you're a local resident or one of the many visitors who love this place, you're in for a proper treat.

So, what's all this about dancing sheep?
Let's get straight to it. A group of performers called Flock are bringing their unique show to the city. And when I say performers, I mean a group of incredible dancing sheep. Well, people dressed as very convincing sheep, but let's not ruin the magic. Heidi, Henrietta, and their cute little lambs are set to take over the piazza just outside York Minster, and they’ll even be strutting their stuff down Goodramgate.
Imagine the sight! A flock of woolly wonders busting out moves in front of one of the world's most beautiful cathedrals. It’s the kind of thing that makes you love this city. And, of course, what's an event in 2024 without the chance for a good photo? You’ll be able to get up close and grab a selfie with the performers. Trying to get a sheep to look at the camera at the right time sounds like a challenge, but it'll make for a brilliant memory. This isn’t just any old street performance; it’s a full-on experience with some very special Yorkshire sheep.
These brilliant dancing sheep will be making the city centre their stage, offering some unexpected fun for everyone passing by. It promises to be a highlight of the Yorkshire Day celebrations in York.
Who's behind this baa-rilliant idea?
This fantastic bit of fun is being brought to us by the York BID. Now, you might see that name around and wonder what it is. Basically, the York BID (which stands for Business Improvement District) is a group funded by local businesses. They all chip in to a central pot, and that money is used to make the city centre an even better place to live, work, and visit. They're the team working behind the scenes on projects that make York safer, cleaner, and more exciting.
They’re not the council, but an organisation completely focused on improving the heart of the city. And they know how to put on great events. You might remember the Actual Reality Arcade they organised in July, which saw over 2,000 people come along. They’re all about creating experiences that get people into the city centre and put a smile on their faces.
Carl Alsop, who is the Operations Manager at York BID, is clearly buzzing about it:
“We’re so excited to celebrate Yorkshire Day in style with Flock. This immersive and entertaining experience is a fantastic way to draw people into the city centre and create joyful experiences for residents and visitors.”
And you can't argue with that. It's these kinds of unique events that make the city feel alive.
More than just sheep: it's about making York amazing
While a performance by Flock is obviously a brilliant day out, it's part of a much bigger picture. The York BID is committed to hosting memorable events that benefit everyone. When they put on free attractions, it encourages both locals and tourists to spend time in the city centre. And when more people are wandering around, they’re more likely to pop into a local shop, grab a bite to eat in a café, or visit one of the other amazing attractions.
It's a clever way of supporting the local economy while giving something back to the community. These events are designed to appeal to everyone, from families looking for a day out to couples wanting something different to do. They create a wonderful atmosphere that makes residents proud of their city and gives visitors another reason to come back. This kind of thinking helps keep our city vibrant and thriving.
What's this Purple Flag thing all about?
You might have heard that York is a Purple Flag city. What does that actually mean? Well, think of it like the Blue Flag award for beaches. A Blue Flag tells you a beach is clean, safe, and well-managed. A Purple Flag does the same thing, but for a city or town centre in the evening and at night.
It’s a special international accreditation that shows a city is excellent at managing its night-time economy. That means from the early evening when people are heading out for dinner, to later at night when they're heading home, the area is safe, welcoming, and enjoyable. Getting this accreditation isn't easy; a city has to meet a high set of standards. The York BID is the organisation that manages the Purple Flag status for our city, making sure York continues to be a great place after dark.
How York earned its colours
So, how does York keep its Purple Flag status? It’s not just by chance. It’s down to a number of brilliant projects run by the York BID, all designed to make the city centre safer and more welcoming for all visitors and residents. These include:
- Street Rangers: Think of these guys as the friendly faces of the city. They patrol the streets, providing a reassuring presence. They can give you directions, help with a problem, or just be a point of contact if you need assistance. They play a massive part in making people feel safe.
- Taxi Marshals: We've all been there. Trying to get a cab on a busy night can be a bit of a nightmare. The Taxi Marshals help manage the queues at taxi ranks, making sure everything is orderly and people can get home safely. A simple idea that makes a huge difference.
- Street Cleansing: This one is pretty straightforward. A cleaner city is a nicer and safer-feeling city. The street cleansing teams work hard to keep our city centre looking its best, day and night.
- Colour & Light: This is a fantastic initiative that uses creative lighting to make the city look beautiful after dark. It can involve anything from art installations to architectural lighting that highlights York's stunning buildings, making evening walks a real joy.
It’s the combination of fun, free events like the dancing sheep, and these practical, safety-focused initiatives that earned York its impressive accreditation. It shows a real commitment to everyone who uses the city.
