The Go Racing In Yorkshire Summer Festival, sponsored by Sky Bet, wrapped up its week-long celebration of horse racing with warm weather, enthusiastic crowds, and thrilling competitions.

This festival, starting at Pontefract on July 19, showcased a variety of events including music nights, family days, evening races, and Group races across eight of Yorkshire’s nine racecourses.

A Week of Excitement and Charity

Over 75,000 racegoers participated in the festival, enjoying the diverse fixtures and events. The festival not only focused on the excitement of horse racing but also incorporated charitable activities. Sky Bet’s Paddock and Chips initiative, where jockeys competed in a football competition, raised over £8,700 for the Matt Hampson Foundation. Additionally, a prize draw to win a shoe from the 2023 Group 1 winning sprinters is still active online, further contributing to the fundraising efforts.

Graham Lee’s Inspiring Journey

Jockey Graham Lee, who suffered life-changing injuries in a fall in November, has been undergoing rehabilitation at the Matt Hampson Foundation in Leicestershire. The foundation’s support includes intensive physiotherapy, aiding Graham’s recovery process.

Key Highlights and Awards

The festival’s leading jockey title, sponsored by Sky Bet, was awarded to Oisin Orr for the second consecutive year. The Goldsborough Hall leading trainer of the week award went to David O’Meara. A notable event was the charity race for stable staff at Thirsk, which was won by John Greaves, who also secured the Sky Bet sponsored moment of the week.

Festival Atmosphere

Charlotte Russell, General Manager of Go Racing In Yorkshire, praised the event, stating, “The festival encompasses everything that racing has to offer in Yorkshire and is the perfect showcase for our great sport. There was a lovely relaxed atmosphere around the courses as racegoers young and old enjoyed the sport on offer and the extra additions put on by the racecourses.”

Recognising Efforts

The Best Turned Out competition saw a tie between the yards of Adrian Keatley and Gemma Tutty, with both winning three best-turned-out awards in Sky Bet-sponsored races. The winning staff celebrated their achievements with a cash bonus and a pizza party.

Looking Forward

The success of the Go Racing In Yorkshire Summer Festival highlights the vibrant horse racing culture in Yorkshire. With continued support from sponsors like Sky Bet and the enthusiastic participation of racegoers, the festival is set to be a staple event in the horse racing calendar for years to come.
