Can You Name the New Country Park at Welbeck?

Welcome to Yorkshire

Published on July 10th, 2024

Wakefield residents have a unique opportunity to leave their mark on a new country park being developed at Welbeck. The council is inviting everyone to suggest a name that reflects the rich heritage and history of the area.

Residents can submit their name suggestions online until midnight on Sunday, July 21. The process is simple and can be done via the following survey link: NameOurNewCountryPark-Welbeck. This initiative is part of the council's effort to engage the community in local projects and preserve the area's cultural legacy.

A New Park for Welbeck

Cllr Jack Hemingway, the Wakefield Council’s Cabinet member for Climate Change and Environment, expressed the council's enthusiasm for the new park:

“We’re really excited to be planning a new country park at Welbeck. This is a great opportunity for people to get involved and to suggest names that are rooted in the local heritage or part of the local legacy. And what a claim to fame to have named a country park, so keep those ideas coming in.”

The new park will transform 200 hectares of previously derelict land for public enjoyment. The site, once a quarry until 1998, was used as a landfill site and is now undergoing restoration to become a vibrant green space. This project will provide residents with a beautiful area to explore and enjoy.

Restoration and Development

Restoration work on the site has been ongoing, with parts of the land already returned to council ownership. A portion of the site has been integrated into the Southern Washlands Nature Reserve, recognized as a Local Wildlife Site. The park's development will be phased, with new sections opening over time as the restoration progresses.

In an autumn 2023 survey, residents were asked about their visions for the park. Popular suggestions included natural woodlands, grasslands, walking trails, and scenic landscapes. These ideas are being incorporated into the park's design to create a space that meets the community's desires and needs.

Environmental Impact and Community Benefits

The new country park is not just about creating a recreational space; it's also a significant step towards the council's environmental goals. The park will feature wildlife habitats, tree planting areas, and extensive walking and cycling routes. These elements will contribute to Wakefield's net zero ambitions by promoting biodiversity and reducing carbon footprints.

This naming initiative follows the successful community involvement in naming new woods in 2022, such as Hope Woods in Snapethorpe and Maypole Woods in Gawthorpe. These projects demonstrate the council's commitment to involving residents in local developments and preserving the natural beauty and heritage of the area.

Get Involved

This is a chance for residents to make their mark on a project that will benefit generations to come. Whether inspired by local history, natural beauty, or personal memories, all suggestions are welcome. Be part of this exciting development by submitting your name idea and contributing to the legacy of Welbeck.
