Get ready, Bradford! The hit musical Hairspray is about to light up the Alhambra Theatre from 25 to 30 November. Directed by Loose Women’s Brenda Edwards, who’s no stranger to the role of “Motormouth” Maybelle, this production promises to be one to remember.

With choreography by Olivier Award-winner Drew McOnie, expect high-energy moves that’ll have you dancing in your seat.

What makes this Hairspray production special?

For many, Hairspray is more than just a musical—it’s a celebration of acceptance, diversity, and big dreams. Set in the 1960s, it follows Tracy Turnblad, a girl with big dreams, a bigger personality, and some seriously big hair. She’s determined to make it onto the dance floor of a popular TV show, and along the way, she becomes a local celebrity and uses her fame to fight for equality and interracial unity in Baltimore.

The Alhambra Theatre’s production brings together an incredible team, with Brenda Edwards joining Paul Kerryson in the director’s chair. Edwards knows the role of “Motormouth” Maybelle well, having portrayed her in past tours. With this experience, she’s set to bring fresh insights to this latest production, along with co-director Paul Kerryson, known for his acclaimed work on shows like Chicago and Sweeney Todd. Adding to the magic, Drew McOnie (famous for his choreography in In the Heights and Jesus Christ Superstar) will be behind the dance numbers.

Meet the cast

This cast has talent to spare, featuring:

  • Neil Hurst as Edna Turnblad
  • Joanne Clifton as Velma Von Tussle
  • Michelle Ndegwa as Motormouth Maybelle
  • Soloman Davy as Link Larkin
  • Alexandra Emmerson-Kirby as Tracy Turnblad
  • Katlo as Little Inez
  • Reece Richards as Seaweed
  • Allana Taylor as Amber Von Tussle

Each of these actors brings their unique style, capturing the heart and humour that has made Hairspray a fan favourite. Plus, they’re joined by an energetic ensemble ready to bring every scene to life.

Songs you won’t stop singing

You can’t talk about Hairspray without mentioning the music! With songs like Welcome to the 60s, You Can’t Stop the Beat, and Good Morning Baltimore, written by the award-winning duo Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, the show’s soundtrack is packed with catchy tunes and big band numbers that are hard to resist.

The musical, adapted from John Waters’ 1988 film, made its Broadway debut in 2002, where it won an impressive eight Tony Awards. Since then, it’s been celebrated worldwide and even adapted into a 2007 film starring John Travolta and Michelle Pfeiffer. The story may be over 30 years old, but its themes of love, acceptance, and determination still strike a chord today.
