What’s on at the Festival of Learning?

The festival is all about lifelong learning, meaning it doesn’t matter if you’re fresh out of school, returning to work after a break, or just want to explore new career options. Here’s what you can expect:

  • Job and training advice – Speak to employers and training providers from across the district.
  • Interview tips – Learn how to feel more confident and make a great first impression.
  • New skills for the future – Get insights into growing industries like digital tech, sustainable energy, and creative careers.
  • Support for non-English speakers – Workshops will be available for people who don’t have English as their first language.
  • Healthy lifestyle tips – Discover how learning new skills can also improve your wellbeing.

Why Wakefield is Hosting This Event

Wakefield isn’t just throwing a learning festival for the sake of it. The district is actually a UNESCO Global Learning City, meaning it’s officially recognised for its efforts to promote lifelong learning. This event is part of a bigger commitment to help residents upskill, improve their job prospects, and contribute to a stronger local economy.

According to Cllr Michael Graham, Wakefield Council’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Economic Growth:

“These events will highlight the value of gaining new skills, whatever your age. It’s never too late to learn something new. Maybe you want to get into work, or you’re already employed and you're aiming for a promotion.”

He also pointed out that learning isn’t just about work:

“Lifelong learning isn’t only about improving job prospects or increasing your household income. It’s helping people live more healthy, independent lives. Whether that’s managing your own finances or learning new digital skills.”

Free Events, No Strings Attached

One of the best parts? It’s all free. The festival is being funded by the UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF), so there’s no cost to residents. Plus, events will be held in various locations, including major employers and schools across Wakefield.

And the timing couldn’t be better—the festival coincides with National Careers Week, making it a perfect chance to refocus on your professional and personal growth.
