|Ossett Library is set to reopen on Monday 23 September 2024, following an extensive refurbishment project that has breathed new life into its home at Ossett Town Hall.
The revitalised library promises to be a hub for reading, learning, and community engagement, while preserving the historic charm of the Grade II listed building.

A fresh start for a historic building
Located on the first floor of Ossett Town Hall, the newly refurbished library will offer visitors modern facilities within a setting steeped in history. The renovation includes significant upgrades, such as a new lift for improved accessibility, restored stained-glass windows, and a more energy-efficient heating system.
The external repairs were just as meticulous, with the building’s stone roof restored, windows repaired, and the iconic clock tower undergoing refurbishment to safeguard it for future generations.
The community at the heart of the project
Cllr Hannah Appleyard, Wakefield Council’s Cabinet Member for Culture, Leisure, and Sport, expressed her excitement about the reopening.
“We can’t wait to welcome everyone back to Ossett Library, to enjoy this wonderful new facility, in our fantastic historic building,”
she said.
The refurbished library is designed to serve as more than just a space for borrowing books. As Cllr Appleyard notes,
“The library offers so many opportunities to read, study, and learn about local and family history, connect with others, and be part of a vibrant community.”
Her words highlight the library’s dual role as a place for personal enrichment and social interaction.
A modern library with something for everyone
Visitors to the library will find a wide selection of adult and children’s books, including talking books and large print editions. Additionally, the library offers computers with internet access, study spaces, and printing and scanning facilities. The space is also equipped with a local studies room, which will focus on local and family history, providing residents with a valuable resource to explore their heritage.
A small meeting room will be available for community events, alongside the re-launch of the Friends of Ossett Library group, encouraging local people to get involved in supporting and promoting this vibrant facility.
Weekly events and a glimpse into Ossett’s past
The library will feature a full programme of weekly and monthly events designed to appeal to all ages. These will include Under 5s story times, adult reading groups, craft and puzzle sessions, and an after-school student club. Families can look forward to weekend events, providing entertainment and learning opportunities.
Adding to its cultural offering, Ossett Library will also house a museum hub, displaying artefacts and stories from the town's history. The first exhibition will focus on the unique Gawthorpe coal-carrying competition, a traditional event that is part of Ossett’s local heritage. This exhibit has been co-curated with the community, ensuring it resonates with local residents.
A successful partnership in restoration
The project was led by William Birch & Sons Ltd, a company with a long history of restoring historic buildings. Simon Potter, the company’s Construction Director, spoke about the significance of this project, stating,
“Restoring this Grade II listed building at the heart of Ossett town centre has been a privilege, and as we celebrate William Birch's 150th year in business, we are proud to have preserved its historical integrity while creating a bright, airy space for everyone to enjoy.”
