This June, the Wakefield district will be buzzing with excitement as the interactive game, Beat the Street, returns to Normanton and Altofts. From Wednesday, 10 June, to Wednesday, 8 July, residents of all ages will have the chance to get active and explore their local community in a fun and engaging way.

What Is Beat the Street?

Beat the Street is a unique activity trail that encourages people to walk, wheel, cycle, and run while discovering the local area. This initiative has been designed to inspire everyone—from young children to older adults—to get moving and enjoy the outdoors. With special sensors called beat boxes installed on lampposts throughout the community, participants can tap their contactless cards or use a smartphone app to score points as they travel from one beat box to another.

The further participants go, the more points they earn, turning everyday journeys into exciting competitions. Schools, community groups, and families can compete against each other in a friendly challenge that promotes physical activity and community spirit.

Launch Event Details

The launch of Beat the Street will kick off with a vibrant event on Wednesday, 10 June, at The Brig in Altofts, located at 1 St Mary's Road, Normanton, Wakefield, WF6 2JH. Starting at 9:30 am, the event will feature a community relay involving local schools, community groups, and partners. This energetic start will set the tone for a month of exploration and fun.

Cllr Lukasz Borcz, Wakefield Council’s Cabinet Member for Culture and Sport, expressed enthusiasm for the initiative:

“We are delighted to be bringing Beat the Street to Normanton and Altofts and to see communities coming together in such a fun and inclusive way. This initiative is a fantastic opportunity to help people of all ages become more active while exploring their local area and building connections with others.”

Beat the Street has proven to be a hit in other areas, such as Featherstone and Hemsworth, where thousands of residents took part. The initiative has not only increased walking and cycling levels but also helped people reconnect with their communities. It promotes a healthier lifestyle while fostering friendships and community ties.

How to Get Involved

Participation in Beat the Street is completely free and open to everyone. Primary school pupils will receive their cards through their schools, while other residents can pick up a free card or download the app from www.beatthestreet.me. Families, schools, workplaces, and community groups are encouraged to join in, whether by forming teams or simply getting out and exploring the area.

Benefits of Participation

Beat the Street is more than just a game; it’s an opportunity to enjoy the many benefits of being active. Regular physical activity can improve health, boost mood, and enhance overall well-being. This initiative also aims to reduce congestion and improve air quality in the area, making it a win-win for participants and the community alike.

With the promise of fun, friendly competition, and the chance to explore local parks and paths, Beat the Street is set to bring the community together this summer. It’s a chance for everyone to step outside, discover new places, and perhaps even make new friends along the way.

As the start date approaches, excitement is building in Normanton and Altofts. The community is encouraged to take part in this vibrant activity trail and experience the joys of movement, connection, and exploration. Whether walking to school, cycling with friends, or just enjoying a leisurely stroll, Beat the Street invites everyone to join in the fun and make the most of the summer.
