A beautiful nature reserve with lots of really good hides to observe the birds. The paths are well maintained. It's easy to spend many hours here photographing the wildlife. There's a great snack van here too. Highly recommended.
Large wetland wildlife reserve, several hides and screens. Saw redpoll, siskin, reed bunting, vague sighting of a well disguised bittern and many ducks gulls and herons.
This is a large area of old quarry workings being converted into a wetland nature reserve. Some lakes are mature but others are in the process of change but all are currently very successful habitats. There are a number hides available for use and a snack bar & facilities local to the (free) car park area. There are a number of footpaths available around the site and using national footpaths and those from the reserve it is possible to walk from a few yards to many miles.
Let me share my thoughts on the infrastructure, as it made an incredibly positive impression on me. There are plenty of hides, all clean, with photos and descriptions – you can really see that someone takes good care of everything. The greenery is trimmed here and there to create little 'windows' onto interesting views. The bushes in front of the benches are also cut back/mown. There’s a nice sheltered spot with tables; a large free car park and toilets. Many paid nature reserves could take an example from you. Truly 10/10! Unfortunately, it’s quite far for me, but I’ll definitely be back one day. Ps: I saw a grass snake in the water 🤩
Just a great place for nature lovers in general, birders in particular. If you just want a quiet walk then it is ideal as well. People using it all seem respectful of the area and wildlife. Ample parking and there is the fantastic Butty Bus. Brilliant owner and staff, the food and drinks are top notch and well priced. Even on a rainy day there are a number of well maintained hides and a covered picnic area. I've seen it developed over the years and it's a real hidden gem. Perfect for individuals, families or even larger groups. Dogs are ok on the main thoroughfare but not around the lakes for obvious reasons.
