Goodness me! Me and my mother came here for lunch as we love the shop downstairs - as soon as you come upstairs, it’s a dark and empty carpeted room, then we went and sat by the window next to a bizarre huge cartoon cardboard figure. Anyway! Ordered soup and toasties - my mum asked for vegan cheese which they had, but she wanted literally anything else in the sandwich too as vegan cheese alone is not great, we were told no as ‘there’s no time to start cutting onions at this time… we were one of the two tables in. I asked for fresh juice, definitely from a carton, and the soup was topped with some sort of vegetable crisps which was a bit odd? My sandwiches were stale, on the wrong bread that I asked for, and didn’t reflect the lovely artisan quality of the downstairs shop. I didn’t feel like the staff would be interested in changing these mistakes or have time despite the cafe being silent and empty by that point. Just a disappointing, below-average cafe unfortunately. Maybe look into using fresher ingredients and providing napkins instead of the weird paper towels with stains on them and rips, and a detached glass panel on the table. The younger staff seemed lovely and it has lots of potential…….. :)
A true deli experience. A wealth of items including, cheese, meats, pate and wine. The shop is a treasure trove of food. My friends and I purchased several items.
First time I've ever felt compelled to leave a review of a shop based solely on price. Are they actually serious? Think of the most expensive, artisanal farm shop you've ever seen, double the prices and there you have Lewis & Cooper. I walked out after seeing SIX chocolate covered Brazil nuts for £8.50. And it was so busy. You'd have to be an absolute nutter to shop here.
I eat to live so gourmet dining is foreign to me but you have got to love the sensory pleasure of this iconic grocery store. A jewel in Northallerton's crown.

I was keen to take my son & his American girlfriend to lunch in Northallerton as we had a pleasant lunch last year, I chose Lewis & Cooper again. I thought it would be a nice treat. Unfortunately the experience was an utter embarrassment. Dirty torn tablecloths, tearoom had seen better days, staff couldn't be bothered to engage, no other customers at all (I know why now) & downright cheeky waitress. My son is lactose intolerant & I am vegan. We had a nice conversation about the options with staff before, but this woman couldn't have been less helpful. She was actually rude. Only option was a sad cold vegan cheese sandwich (like a child's portion) . Very expensive, miserable, poor quality, and unpleasant. Stay away. It's gone downhill rapidly & deserve to fail with such bad food & service
