The Platform 3 car park is run as a business but was created at the request of the management of the railway at the time. They were very short of parking only about 40 spaces after staff are in. Customers used to come not be able to park, and either miss their train or leave having not travelled. This car park allows all the customers to fit in, which results in a yearly gain for the railway. (the railway estimated this to be in the 7 figures range ). So yes the car park owners do make a profit, but so do the railway. They work together. Disabled are charged for, as it is after all not a charity. The price is the same for all day parking at both car parks. Both charge for disabled. Although shorter parking is available at the NYMR for £2 per hour. Overnight parking is allowed at Platform 3. There are bins, and water provided.
A long stay car park ideal for a ride on the North Yorks Moor Railway or a wander around Pickering. Reasonable value at £6 (2022) for all day parking. It’s attendant operated meaning no worries about unfair tickets. Lots of space, over 100, so a great place to park for the day hassle free.
£7 a day I feel is ok as I decided to stop overnight too. The cut off is 10pm when the warden returns and closes off the car park. I got there about 8pm to stay overnight. So £14 to stay overnight and 2 days parking I think is ok. The NYMR car park was full as it’s quite small. Warden very helpful and no problem me camping in my car.
No bins. No toilets. No platform. It's actually private property with a paying car park. £7 all day or £20 for 24 hours. Which is great for a stopover while touring.. but no services at all. So only 3 stars.
Watch out for this, it's a tourist trap set up to look like the real station car park but it isn't, it's some piggybacking opportunists charging £7 when the real station car park is just beyond this on the left, costs just £5 for the day, is a much shorter walk to both the station and to the town, and at the real car park all the money goes to the preservation charity instead of these opportunists' back pockets. Don't stop here, keep following the green station signs around to the left. You'll save time and money, and your money will go to the right people.
