Impressive stone obelisk towering over Richmond's attractive market square, constructed in 1771 to replace an earlier market cross. The obelisk is a distinctive feature of Richmond and a popular meeting point on market days, with plenty of parking close by. Popular tourist spots including the castle are only a short walk away.
As obelisks go this is a classic. Tall, pointy, made of stone, purpose uncertain. Commanding the centre of Richmond this monument provides a focal point and unmistakable, er, big thing. Beautiful.
This 59ft (18m) high stone obelisk dominates Richmond's beautiful historic marketplace. It was built in 1771 when it replaced the old medieval market cross. The steps around it are a popular meeting place and lunch spot. On the busy market day that I was here, there was also a barista and café tables right next to the obelisk. A good opportunity to enjoy a coffee and observe the everyday life of the market square.
Great place! I love small town like Richmond...
Fantastic obelisk right in the town square.
