Stunning church built in the Victorian Gothic Revival style in 1870, one of the finest examples of its type in the United Kingdom. The church, designed by architect William Burges, sits within the National Trust's Studley Royal Park, and is managed by English Heritage. It's free to visit as it sits outside the gated grounds of Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal Water Gardens, both of which are well worth exploring while in the area. The church's tall spire and ornate windows give it a distinctive appearance from outside, but it's the interior that's truly remarkable. The meticulously decorated chancel is a masterpiece, with a beautifully detailed domed ceiling, finely painted walls, elaborate mosaic floor and vibrant stained glass windows. It's a level of detail and extravagance more typical of a cathedral than a country church. There are volunteers inside the church to answer any questions you may have. Organ music was playing while I looked around - it was a speaker rather than a real organist, but still enhanced the atmosphere. St Mary's is open from April to October between 13:00 and 15:30. I'd highly recommend planning a visit to Studley Royal Park to coincide with these times, as the interior of the church is not to be missed.
A really interesting church which is great to visit. The outside is impressive but the inside is even more impressive. It was free to get in for us, but i don't think it is.
Beautiful church in idyllic surroundings but apparently @EnglishHeritage have a no dog policy! Badly behaved/ loud children are allowed in but not well have quiet dogs! Given that our dogs have been in hundreds of churches & cathedrals all over the UK, this is ridiculous & anachronistic!! ππ€¬
A lovely joint National Trust/ English Heritage church maintained to a great standard. The roof and walls around the alter are magnificent. We were very lucky to see a small herd of young male deer just outside the church. There were two very knowledgeable attendants in the church who were very helpful
Went to Fountain's Abbey, Studley Water Gardens then St Mary's, which Is only open for 2 Hours a day( best to check). Brilliant day out. This church is well worth a visit. Parking not good unless on the park.
