The Portly Pig in Ripon is exactly what you want from a proper Yorkshire local. We visit with our dog and baby, and it’s consistently welcoming, relaxed, and genuinely family-friendly without feeling compromised. The beer selection is outstanding - easily the best we’ve come across in North Yorkshire. There’s always a thoughtful, well-kept range that goes beyond the usual crowd-pleasers, and it’s clear whoever’s choosing the beers really knows what they’re doing. Food-wise, the pork pie and piccalilli deserve a special mention: simple, classic, and done properly. It’s the kind of pub that gets the fundamentals right and doesn’t try to be anything it’s not. If you’re after a warm atmosphere, great beer, and a place where dogs, babies, and adults all feel equally welcome, The Portly Pig is hard to beat.

Fantastic little town bar , more like a converted shop. They sell a fantastic choice of real ales, at reasonable prices also bar snacks available. To go upstairs that are step leads you onto three quant rooms decorated like an antique shop with a mismatch of furniture that just seems to work. See images. I would definitely recommend this place to stop off and relax, chill, and enjoy a beer or two .

Our first visit, early evening on the 14th October 2025 and we'll be back!.. A lovely quirky Bar, great service and the Shandy was the best I've ever had served by the friendliest Glaswegian in Ripon! If ya know ya know and thank you 10/10 from the couple from Sheffield.

Cracking little place, really friendly people, great atmosphere and service. We thought it was somewhere that served just bottles but nope, lots of cask ales, cider and porters. Excellent quality. Didn’t eat but the cold platters looked lovely.
