The first free standing obelisk in England, and centrepiece of Ripon's market square. The obelisk, designed by architect Nicholas Hawksmoor, was erected in the early 1700s, replacing an earlier market cross. There's a bit to see around the market square, including an old taxi drivers' shelter and a selection of attractive buildings housing a decent range of shops.
As others have posted already, the first free standing obelisk in England, constructed in 1702 but refurbished in 1760's with the Ripon Horn plaque and weather Vane added.
We had a late afternoon visit to Ripon town centre, the place is peaceful with lots of friendly people around, plenty of parking spaces and many little cafes to grab a bite if you are hungry.
The Ripon Obelisk was designed by Nicholas Hawksmoor and constructed in 1702 with the support of John Aislabie, Ripon's Member of Parliament.
