As summer approaches and the sun starts to shine, many workers in the UK are finding it difficult to juggle work and childcare responsibilities. A recent survey has uncovered some surprising truths about how families handle these challenges during the school holidays. The research found that a significant number of parents are resorting to taking sick days, not because of illness, but to manage their childcare needs.

Summer Sickies: A Growing Trend

According to a study conducted by instantprint, a whopping 43% of UK workers admit to having taken a “summer sickie.” This term refers to when someone calls in sick to work, often to enjoy a sunny day or to deal with personal matters. Among working parents, the trend is particularly pronounced, with 31% confessing that they have taken a sick day specifically to handle childcare issues.

The survey, which included responses from 2,000 office workers, highlights how the pressures of rising childcare costs and the need for support during the six-week school break are leading many to this decision. The findings suggest that while sunny weather might tempt people away from their desks, financial stress is also a major factor influencing their choices.

Childcare Costs Cause Stress

One of the most eye-opening revelations from this research is the impact of childcare costs on families. Nearly 48% of parents reported feeling financially stressed due to the high costs associated with summer childcare. Many families are struggling to afford childcare during the holidays, which can lead to difficult decisions about work and family commitments.

Statistics from other reports echo these concerns. For instance, a report by Pregnant Then Screwed revealed that 45.9% of parents have had to dip into their savings or even go into debt to cover childcare costs. Additionally, 53% of parents spend more than a quarter of their household income on childcare, which can be overwhelming.

The Role of Family Support

The survey also highlighted the crucial role that grandparents and relatives play in supporting working families. It found that 62% of working parents rely on their grandparents or other family members for childcare at least once a month. This support is invaluable, especially during the summer holidays when regular childcare arrangements can become a challenge.

However, not all families have access to this support network. Among parents without regular family assistance, 47% reported that school holidays are the most financially stressful time of the year. In contrast, only 31% of those who receive family help feel the same way.

Flexibility in the Workplace

Many workers believe that flexible working arrangements can help alleviate some of the pressures associated with childcare. The survey found that 58% of employees think that having flexible hours reduces the temptation to take a sick day unnecessarily. Furthermore, 63% believe that greater flexibility during the summer months can boost both morale and productivity.

Vicki Russell, Head of TX at instantprint, stated:

“While the idea of a summer sickie often raises a smile, our findings suggest there are some serious challenges sitting behind workplace absences, particularly for working parents during school holidays.”

This highlights the need for employers to understand the difficulties their employees face outside of work, especially during the summer.

Excuses for Calling in Sick

The survey also revealed some of the most common excuses used by workers when calling in sick during the summer. These include:

  • Stomach bugs (42%)

  • Migraines and headaches (38%)

  • Food poisoning (34%)

  • Flu-like symptoms (31%)

  • Childcare emergencies (28%)

  • Caring for a sick family member (24%)

Interestingly, 27% of respondents admitted to calling in sick simply because the weather was too nice to work. This speaks to the strong relationship many have with sunny days, which can make sitting in an office feel especially challenging.
