In an audacious move to secure a job, a sales candidate made headlines by sending an A0-sized CV to a printing company, using the company's own services to create a standout job application.

The Yorkshire-based online printer Instantprint was in the process of expanding its sales team when the Head of Sales, Craig Quinn, received an unusual piece of mail. Upon opening the package, Quinn was greeted with a massive CV printed on a poster, a far cry from the standard A4 or digital PDF format typically seen in job applications.

"Sales is a competitive role to get into, and as one of the UK’s largest printers, we receive hundreds of applications when new roles go live,"

Quinn remarked.

"When I received David’s CV and I began unrolling it, I thought that there was no way this candidate wasn’t getting an interview."

The Bold Move

The ingenious job application was crafted by 26-year-old Business Development Executive David Wright. Inspired by a previous candidate who had successfully applied for a marketing role at instantprint by flyering the company’s car park, Wright decided to take a similar bold approach. Having relocated from Ireland to Rotherham for the role, Wright was determined to make a memorable impression.

"I remembered seeing instantprint in the news a while back because a candidate had successfully applied for a marketing role by flyering the car park, and I thought ‘what a great idea!’. I wanted my application to make a big statement just like that one had and what’s bigger and bolder than a giant CV?"

Wright explained.

The Unveiling

Quinn, the hiring manager, was immediately struck by Wright's creativity and determination. The A0 CV not only captured Quinn’s attention but also demonstrated Wright's deep understanding of the company’s brand and culture.

With over 60 applicants vying for the Business Development Executive role, Wright’s unique approach set him apart. His CV included all the necessary details such as contact information and employment history, but its presentation on such an unconventional format made it impossible to ignore. Consequently, instantprint quickly invited him for an interview, and he was subsequently offered the job, which he accepted. Wright commenced his new role in April.

"David’s application did more than grab my attention. It showed that he’d researched the brand, and that he had the right attitude, drive to succeed and sense of humour to fit the team perfectly. I can’t wait to see what ideas he brings to the table,"

Quinn added.
