I recently tried Rennards Fish & Chips in Scarborough and came away seriously impressed. If you’re looking for a classic chippy done very well, this is it. The fish is top quality—fresh, flaky, and cooked to perfection. The batter manages that difficult balance of crispy yet not greasy, with good golden colour and flavour. The chips are also excellent: generous portions, fluffy inside, nicely crisped on the outside. Pair that with mushy peas or curry sauce, and you’ve got a meal that feels very comforting. Service stands out just as much as the food. The staff are warm, friendly, and seem to genuinely care about getting things right. I saw them accommodating families with children, even cutting up sausages for little ones, and always making sure you had what you needed.
Takeaway on Monday noon (noone else except me) took 11 minutes. On 9th minute I asked if I could wait in their cafe (almost empty), and they told me that they have different prices there. Very average fish, not soft and more dry than usual. Chips lower than average - flavourless, kinda firm inside and not very crispy. Not sure why they have such a high rating and much more reviews than the place nearby, seems fake to me now.
I came here quite a few times ten years ago and I liked it, so we were in Scabs again so I though I'd come back. Very very different experience; it must be under different ownership. I will not be coming back. We were 2 adults and 3 kids and we ate in; the restaurant was totally empty at 1800 on a Saturday night. We need to changed tables because the first one, although 'clear', had'nt been wiped. We orderd a couple of drinks and the three kids wanted water. They brought 3 bottles of extortionately-priced mineral water. The food itself was moderate. The type of fish and chips that you'd get in a kebab takeaway, but at a greatly inflated price. Don't bother with this expensive but mediocre place. Wackers is the place for dine-in fish and chips in Scarborough, but they close so early!
Popped here today with my elderly mother for fish, chips, and curry sauce. Karen served us, what a revelation, whatever Karen is getting paid, isn't enough. Very friendly, amazing service, she even overheard us talking about having scrap sandwiches as a kid. So.... 2 minutes later a bowl of scraps arrive to go with my bread! The fish was white, batter lovely, and chip and curry also excellent. Well worth the money.
Wanted a couple of portions of chips. Payment taken and then we were given a number and asked to wait. 20 minutes later our number was called. A lot of people called in just for a quick visit and were also waiting. Not what you would expect from a traditional British seaside chippy when you just want a snack. Nobody said there was a wait. If they had I wouldn't of paid and had to wait as there are plenty of others to chose from in that area.
